Speaker 1:

Have you ever felt terrified of public speaking? Maybe you know what to say and how to say it, but the thought of those people looking at you, judging you, fools you with dread. Maybe you must speak to succeed, but the stress feels almost unbearable. If so, I have good news for you you are not alone, and this podcast will turn you terrified into triumph, your fear into fun, and teach you five steps to shine. While speaking At school and as a young adult, I appeared painfully shy. You've made me awkward and anxious. Yet because of certain guidelines, I could always shine when speaking to audiences. This helped me succeed at interviews, professionally and elsewhere, winning me chances, respect and esteem. As I believe prevention is better than cure, I shall share these proven guidelines with you to prevent your failing. Also, as, generally, success leads to more success, apply them diligently and watch yourself grow to enjoy facing audiences. As you learn to shine at speaking, the first five simple steps are summarised in my unique shine system, where each of the letters S-H-R-N-E stands for a step S is setup. This is the preparation you need before you can even think about speaking, such as knowing your subject matter really well, feeling positive about your subject yourself and your speaking. In future podcasts you will learn how to prepare thoroughly. This includes focusing on opportunities rather than setbacks, and fun ways to improve your creativity, vocabularly, grammar and voice. Future episodes will also help you to overcome stage fright. Be more optimistic, embracing confidence to captivate any audience.

Speaker 1:

H is for hush to be heard, also known as pause for power. Have you ever tried speaking to a disengaged or disinterested audience? Maybe they are chatting or looking at their mobiles. Have you felt hopeless, ignored but needing to be heard? The easiest way is to pause, hush and wait while looking at the main offender, waiting for them to hush. As others pause to see why you have stopped talking and as their eyes follow your gaze, the offender will hush and listen to you. I stands for ignite interest and expire action. The first word you say, the first statement you make, should ignite the audience's interest, which you must keep throughout your speech. Pause for effect, then begin, speak clearly and confidently throughout. I is also for inspire, as your final statement should be to inspire your audience to hire you, support, subscribe or donate to your cause. This final statement is the most important in your whole speech. Pause to get their attention, to re-ignite their attention, and then say your final statement confidently and clearly.

Speaker 1:

There will be another podcast developing this fascinating subject and giving you examples to follow. N stands for no nonsense. In other words, don't allow hecklers to heckle, mutters to mutter or whisperers to whisper Exited course. Look at them. If necessary, clear your throat, laugh, crack a joke. Then move on strongly. If they persist, draw attention to their rudeness by confronting them politely, and we will give you many more examples in further episodes of this podcast.

Speaker 1:

We will show you how to accept no nonsense from your audience in a way that will make them love you and be drawn to you and inspire them to listen to you more. However, first remember prevention is better than cure. So as soon as you see the slightest signs of boredom, we will teach you to act. We will help you to learn when to see these signs, spot them and then change your tone, your pitch, your speed or even your subject to re-ignite the interest before problems or boredom occurs. No nonsense also stands for you and me, the speakers. We mustn't be shy, awkward or fidgety while speaking, and these podcasts and later podcasts will show us exactly how to overcome these habits which can detract the audience from our main message.

Speaker 1:

Most importantly is E. E stands for evoke emotion. Famous Maya Angelou noted people will forget what you say, people will forget what you do, but people will never forget how you made them feel. So use your words, your tone, your pace, your pitch to ensure the audience feels in a way that supports you, such as positive to hire you, compassionate to support your cause or negative enough to say no to your opposition. Then practice, practice, practice.

Speaker 1:

Remembering practice makes perfect. In summary, when speaking, always remember to shine. S for setup, h for hushed to be heard, I for ignite interest and inspire action, n for no nonsense and E for evoke emotion. We will cover all the above topics more fully in the following weeks, giving examples and then also address your questions in further episodes. For homework, write down ways you can apply each of the above to yourself and your own situation, such as how can you set up, when and how would you hush? Think of interesting and inspiring ways to begin and end your speeches and especially, research emotive words to use words that evoke feelings of fun, sadness, happiness, inspiration, powerful words that your audience will remember. Thank you for listening.
