Speaker 1:

Hi to you super speakers in the making, and a heartfelt welcome to today's episode of podcast Shine Speaking. Today, we learn about the N of Shine. N stands for no nonsense. When speaking of no nonsense, I am referring to no nonsense from hecklers in your audience, no nonsense from those helping you and no nonsense regarding your own mindset, preparation and speech delivery. To prevent your audience losing concentration and confidence in you, it is important to deal with hecklers and distractions immediately. A very effective way is to once again pause while confidently looking directly at the heckler. Do not engage with the heckler. Merely pause confidently looking at them as others turn, following your gaze, to also look and even stare at them. Members of the audience may help with dirty looks or asking them to stop. If the heckling continues regardless, or if members of the audience start getting frustrated, showing mounting irritation, even hostility, then it is time for you to say something, but say it firmly, say it clearly and say it with authority, unflinchingly. Keep looking at the distractor piercingly, slightly lower your voice and loudly, clearly, authoritatively say please stop. Pause for a moment and if they do not stop, loudly, clearly, authoritatively say or else you will be removed, if you are at all concerned that this type of nonsense might happen, arrange beforehand that troublemakers can be removed as soon as you request it. This is an extreme case and it is highly unlikely you will ever encounter hecklers or nonsense like this, but if this situation is at all likely, it is good to be prepared. Forewarned is forearmed. You also deserve your say, and I sincerely hope that in turn, you treat others as you yourself would like to be treated.

Speaker 1:

Usually, as soon as you pause with presence, looking straight at them, people stop disturbing your talk, especially when the pause is long and confident enough that others follow your gaze and look at them too. After a break like this, you need to refocus your listener's attention onto what you are saying, and the best way to do this is to pause, clear your throat loudly if necessary, and pause until they are silent again, just as you did at the beginning of your speech. We covered this in the podcast H for hush to be heard. You then proceed to re-ignite their attention, as discussed in part one of the R for it not interest. You then proceed with the rest of your talk as though you had never been interrupted. Generally, it is best to be prepared Find out about your audience If loud or rude, disagreement is likely.

Speaker 1:

You may decide not to speak at all, or you may phrase your speech so carefully that it will cause little or no offence. Personally, would not recommend your tackling speeches in front of challenging audiences until you are very confident, having had many successes when speaking publicly. In reality, I would advise that when you are practicing and when you begin speaking in public, you speak only in front of a appreciate of audiences who agree with what you say and build you up, who want you to succeed and willingly support you. This way, you will gain confidence in public speaking. When you are confident, hecklers will also be less likely to bother you and if they do, you now know how to stop them.

Speaker 1:

Another area to apply your no-nonsense mindset is no-nonsense from those helping you. Choose helpers, such as family or friends, that are truly on your side, truly support you and truly want you to be the best that you can be. You need people you can rely on to listen to you, to motivate you and to inspire you. You need those that will wholeheartedly support you in front of friends, in front of outsiders and behind your back. You need people who are reliable, people who believe you can succeed and people who will ensure that you do succeed. You need people who are never jealous, never spotful and never backbut. You need helpers who are reliable, authentic and who want you to shine. Don't expect, choose or accept less. Most importantly, you need no-nonsense from yourself. You need no-nonsense regarding your own mindset, preparation and speech delivery.

Speaker 1:

Regarding your mindset, embrace confidence, optimism and belief in yourself. Believe that you can speak well, that you will speak well and then do all you can to make it happen. Remember to daily write down things you like about yourself, especially those related to speaking. You may like to listen to podcast part one of S for setup again to refresh your memory. Do not skimp on preparation.

Speaker 1:

It takes much time, energy and dedication to thoroughly research your topic, plan your speech and to practice presenting it. The better prepared you are, the more confident you feel, the better people will rate you and hear what you say. Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. So research well, plan well, prepare well, practice well to perform well and shine. Regarding presentation, ensure that you are neat, clean and tidy, that you look relaxed, dressed appropriately and look your very best. Stand tall, straight and confidently in front of your audience, look straight at them, talk to them and notice their reactions. Enjoy your audience. Enjoy your topic and enjoy sharing it with them. Let your audience hear, see and feel your enthusiasm, positivity and joy. Let your enjoyment of them, of your subject and of public speaking shine through. Let yourself shine at public speaking. Thank you for listening.
