Over the last weeks, you've gone on a wonderful journey From feeling nervous, awkward and maybe fearful you have gone to feeling secure, hopeful and optimistic. From being unprepared, unaware and possibly scared, you have become more prepared, aware and practiced. From uncertainty, doubt and confusion, you now know more, have tried more and can do more Well done. Hopefully you have been rehearsing your short two minute speeches longer, fun and longer, more serious speeches in your practice place made just for you. Hopefully, you have been daily journaling the things that make you happy about your life yourself and your developing speaking skills. Hopefully you have been practicing hush to be heard, igniting interest and inspiring action, as well as looking good, feeling good and speaking aloud with confidence. You should now be well on your way to earning, getting and holding your audience's attention, respect and imagination. And today is the bonus, that extra, that finishing touch that makes your speech unforgettable.
Speaker 1:Today's podcast is about the E of Shan. Today's podcast is about E for emotion. Today's podcast is about how you, the speaker, make your audience feel. Famous Maya Angelou said I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. So let us choose our words carefully, being aware of what our words mean, the context in which we say them and, especially, how they will make our audiences feel. Let us choose words which create the mood, the emotions, the feelings we want our audiences to remember. For instance, describing someone as skinny usually evokes different emotions to when describing the same person as fashionably slim. Describing a hair color as mousy causes different feelings to when describing it as having natural highlights. Describing a person as excessively pushy promotes different emotional responses to when describing them as energetically ambitious. Similarly, calling problems, challenges, stress, excitement, failure, a fresh start evoke different feelings although describing the same characteristics. These different emotions cause listeners to feel, think and respond differently.
Speaker 1:As a speaker, you have that power to not only make your speech unforgettable, but to influence people's minds, decisions and actions. This is awesome. However, with great ability, great influence and great power comes great responsibility. It is therefore so very, very important that you, the speaker, avoid reinforcing biases, causing conflict or manipulation. Instead, constantly ensure you are considerate, empathetic, sensitive. Ensure you are trustworthy, genuine, authentic. Ensure you treat others as you want them to treat you.
Speaker 1:An example of a famous speech, unforgettable because of how it makes us feel, is that of Martin Luther King Jr in 1963. Here are extracts. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you, my friends, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I would suggest that you find and read the whole speech aloud, with pauses, passion, feeling, marvel at its message, marvel at its meaning, marvel at how Martin Luther King Jr used emotive words and phrases to reach out and influence his listeners' feelings, thoughts, decisions. Learn from him, but always remember that, as a speaker evoking emotions, you have great power, and with great power comes great responsibility. So remember, avoid promoting bias, causing conflict or manipulation. Instead, constantly ensure you are always considerate, caring, sensitive. Ensure you are always trustworthy, honest, authentic.
